What type of chair is best for indoor use?

In terms of manoeuvrability a compact, mid-wheel drive (MWD) chair would be the superior option. Due to the main drive wheels being centred directly under the seat it allows the powered wheelchair to turn around that axis.  The wheels turn in opposite directions to each other when turning which keeps the turning circle extremely tight. In addition to this, unlike a front-wheel drive (FWD) or a rear-wheel drive (RWD) powered wheelchair there is no obstruction either behind or in front of you.

How often do I need to charge my powered wheelchair

Power wheelchair batteries should be charged after every use for no less than 8 hours.  In most situations clients use their powered wheelchair throughout the day and then put it on charge in the evening.

Can I drive my powerchair when standing or raised?

Yes you can, you may not be able to go as fast as you normally would for safety reasons but you will still be mobile.

How long will my batteries last for?

There are too many variables such as wheelchair type, battery size, seat functions, terrain etc to give exact information however upon handover we will discuss this with you to give you the required information on charging requirements and battery use.  In some cases such as powered add on’ options, you may want to purchase a second battery to ensure you have a back up.  Some manufacturers build software into the controller so you can receive up-to-date information on battery life and how you use your powered wheelchair.

What happens if my wheelchair breaks down? What if I need something fixed ?

Service and maintenance packages are available at a cost and we will provide you with this information at handover of your new chair.

All chairs are covered with manufacturer warranty – we will explain this during the assessment process.

The breakdown would be covered if it was a warranty issue, however if you have bought into one of our packages, you can contact us directly and we will arrange for one of our engineers to visit you at home.  The engineer will endeavour to repair the wheelchair for you asap. We can also use intelligent software that may be built into your wheelchair, we can use this to receive up-to-date information on service and repair / fault issues . Consent for us to do this will be discussed at handover of your new equipment.

We do not provide breakdown cover – but we will provide you with a list of insurers, you should take out comprehensive cover out that includes Breakdown / Recovery and public liability insurance.

What happens if my condition changes and/or the wheelchair no longer meets my needs?

You should contact us directly if your condition changes.  When you contact us please provide details of how your condition has changed and what aspects of your wheelchair are no longer meeting your needs. Following this we will review your case and agree an appropriate plan with you.

Do I need a high risk pressure relieving cushion even if I don’t suffer from any pressure ulcers?

We will be able to give you the best advice regarding cushions and any other accessories as part of your wheelchair assessment .

Can a Paediatric chair adjust when the child grows?

Yes they can, all of the prescriptive paediatric wheelchairs have the ability to adjust in width or depth. The only thing to consider is that a new base cushion may be required.
